Iwi Registration

Purpose

The Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority is developing a database of members of the Te Kawerau a Maki Iwi. The purpose of the database is to:

  • Enable Iwi members to participate in Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority elections as a voter or a candidate (must be over 18 years old);
  • Allow Iwi members to be involved in shaping the direction of the Iwi;
  • Enable Iwi members to access entitlements such as sponsorship, scholarships
  • Assist Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority to communicate with you; and
  • Build the Iwi whakapapa database.

Eligibility

Registration on the Iwi Register is open to members of the Te Kawerau a Maki Iwi. Descendants of Te Kawerau a Maki are those people who can whakapapa (either by birth, adoption or whangai) to two or more of the following persons:

  • Tawhia ki te Rangi (also known as Te Kawerau a Maki); and/or
  • Mana; and/or
  • Te Au o Te Whenua; and/or
  • Kowhatu ki te Uru.

In order to verify your eligibility to register as an Iwi member, and hence as a beneficiary of Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority, your registration form will need to be approved by a current trustee of Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority. The information supplied on the Iwi Registration Form is confidential within the terms of the Privacy Act 1993, and for the lawful use by the Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority. A person may only access their own personal information.
